About Emmitt J. Nelson

Emmitt retired from Shell Oil Company after a career of over 30 years. With Shell he held a variety of management positions in Operations, Engineering, Design, Construction and Maintenance of petrochemical facilities. These included assignments at both the manufacturing facility and the head office level. During the five years before his retirement, Emmitt was Corporate Manager of Construction Relations and Engineering Standards for Shell Oil Company. He was also Chairman of the Shell Engineering Council and Co-Chairman of the Industry Advisory Committee for The Center for Construction Education at Texas A&M University. While with Shell he was their Business Roundtable (BRT) Construction Committee* representative where he served two years as The BRT Construction Committee Chairman. Emmitt is also a certified teacher of the Safety Modules in CII's Continuing Education Construction Short Courses, conducted at the University of Texas and teaches the Safety Module in the Executive Leadership Course sponsored by The McComb School of Business and CII at the University of Texas, Austin.

Emmitt is now President of Nelson Consulting, Inc., a safety consulting firm specializing in the Zero Injury Concept in eliminating worker injury. He was retained by Shell Oil Company in 1990 to Chair the "Zero Accidents Task Force" of the Construction Industry Institute (CII)** located at The University of Texas. Through research this Task Force determined the unique safety management techniques successful contractors and owners use in the construction industry to achieve Zero worker injury. Emmitt has continued to analyze the research data and uses this information to lead his clients into new realms of excellence in safety performance.

Emmitt is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has been honored with the Business Roundtable Construction Safety Excellence Award; named CII Co-Instructor of the Year in 2003, and inducted into the National Academy of Construction on the basis of his contribution to safety in the construction industry. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas and an associate member of ASSE. Emmitt and his wife, Ginny, live in Houston, Texas.
